One of the winningest major junior hockey programs in Canada, the Toronto Marlboro hockey club bred success on and off the ice for its young players, many of whom went on to careers in the National Hockey League. The Marlies were long associated with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a training ground for their prospects.

As professional hockey changed and the popularity of junior hockey in Toronto waned the Marlies' fate seemed sealed.
